"I want the turf installed by [insert holiday]. Is that realistic?" Almost always yes — if you start today. Here's the true timeline.
Week 1: Research and Samples
Days 1–3: Order free samples. We ship most kits within 24 hours; delivery is typically 3–5 business days.
Days 4–7: Compare samples in your actual yard, in different lighting. Pull the calculator up on your phone and start pricing scenarios.
Don't skip this step. Ordering turf without seeing samples is the #1 source of buyer regret.
Week 2: Design and Quoting
Days 8–10: Finalize square footage using our project calculator. Decide on product, infill, edging, and any accessories.
Days 11–14: If you're going with a pro, get 2–3 quotes from our installer network. If DIY, book your tool rentals (sod cutter, plate compactor, power broom).
Week 3: Order and Delivery
Days 15–17: Place the order. Payment options include financing for projects over $2,500.
Days 18–21: Material arrives. Ground shipping is 5–10 business days depending on your zip code — see our shipping page for exact transit maps.
If you're in a metro with a local warehouse (Phoenix, Miami, Denver, etc.), will-call pickup can be same-day.
Week 4: Base Prep
Days 22–24: Sod removal and excavation. Rent a sod cutter for a Saturday and knock this out in one day for a 500 sq ft yard.
Days 25–28: Base construction — decomposed granite or Class II base, plate-compacted to 95%. This is the most critical week. Take your time. See the full procedure in our installation guide.
Week 5: Turf Installation
Days 29–30: Roll out and acclimate the turf 24 hours before install.
Day 31: Cut, seam, and secure. A 500 sq ft yard is a one-day install for two people.
Days 32–33: Infill and power-broom. Best done on a dry day. Reference our infill guide for quantities.
Week 6: Buffer and First Use
Days 34–42: Buffer week. Address any minor punch-list items (seam touch-ups, edge nail additions, extra infill in high-traffic zones). Then start planning the barbecue.

Weather Considerations
The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center publishes 6–10 day outlooks that let you dodge base-prep during rainy stretches. Wet base = failed compaction.
